I used to really struggle with focus. I would open my book, try to read a few lines, and next thing, my mind had already traveled. Sometimes I would be thinking about food, social media, or even old memories that had nothing to do with what I was studying.
It was frustrating. I wanted to learn, but my brain wasn’t cooperating. So I had to find ways to fix it. I’m not perfect, but these things have helped me stay focused while reading. I believe they can help you too.
1. I Stopped Multitasking
I used to keep my phone beside me while reading. I told myself I would just check it once in a while. But before I knew it, 30 minutes had passed and I was deep in chats and random apps.
What I did:
I now keep my phone far from me when reading. I silence it or use airplane mode. I give myself 25 minutes of full focus before taking a break.
2. I Started Reading With Purpose
Back then, I would open my notes and start reading without a clear goal. No wonder nothing was entering. My brain didn’t know what it was supposed to do.
What I changed:
Before I read, I ask myself, “What do I want to understand from this topic?” That small question helps me stay alert and read with more intention.
3. I Broke My Reading Into Small Parts
Trying to finish a whole topic at once used to wear me out. After a while, I would zone out and just be staring at the page.
What I do now:
I divide the topic into smaller sections. After reading one part, I pause and explain it to myself like I’m teaching someone. That method keeps my brain active.
4. I Used the Pomodoro Trick
I found this method online and it really works. You read for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. After four rounds, you rest for a longer time.
How I use it:
I set a timer and follow the time strictly. No distractions during the reading time. During the break, I stand up, stretch, or take a short walk before coming back.
5. I Paid More Attention to Sleep
There were days I would sleep very late, then wake up and try to study. It never worked. My brain was just tired and confused.
What I do now:
I try to sleep well, especially if I have serious reading to do the next morning. I’ve noticed that reading in the morning, when my mind is fresh, gives me better results.
Just so you know;
Focus is not magic. It’s something you build with practice. If your mind always drifts while reading, you’re not alone. I’ve been there, and I still work on it daily. These small changes made a big difference for me.
Try one or two of them and see how it goes. You don’t need to be perfect, just keep improving step by step.
Let me know in the comments what works for you. We’re all trying to grow together.
